Ok before getting to the heart of this post, let’s talk about how I hate maxi dresses. Well, I did hate maxi dresses, until I realized that they’re not just for warm months. Nothing is more upsetting to me than hot air trapped under a tent of fabric on a summer day, making my nether regions feel like a forest fire. Am I the only one who feels like maxi dresses are some weird puritanical ploy to get women to melt off their private parts? I doubt I am! But it’s Winter now, and there’s a cool breeze outside just waiting to be blown up your long beautiful skirt!

My first fear about wearing a maxi dress was that I may look like Dr Quinn (medicine woman). I was worried that a maxi with booties or boots may make me look like I was straight off the prarie. Then I decided that I might actually be kind of into that, and decided to be the most chic Medicine Woman I could possibly be. Dr Quinn would be proud.

Whether your favorite maxi dress is a super heavy jersey like mine, or it’s a patterned chiffon gown, you can make it work for you. We’re so used to seeing Summertime maxis with flip flops that it takes a big adjustment in our brain to think about wearing them with boots, but that’s what makes it cool ya’ll! Only wearing long dresses in summer is just like any other tired old fashion rule. It needs to be broken, and when it is it almost always looks bad ass. So here’s how you wear your favorite maxi in the Winter: put it on your body, throw on some shoes that will keep your feet warm, and enjoy. That’s all you gotta do. Let me tell you, this winter breeze is just too good to miss out on!

I really like straight maxis, although they are kind of hard to find. I have found some lovely ones at Talbots Woman - of all places! - in wool, heavy jersey and a nice chiffon one. - clearance center of course!

This is the exact dress i've been thinking about buying for my Nikah, but i've been curious on the fit. This post was thus so helpful, thank you!! Do you mind me asking what size you got the dress in?

I wear a size 26, and didn't do any custom adjustments or anything :) I'm glad you like it!

I still don't really wear many maxi dresses (they're always too long on me, which is weird, bc I'm not super short!) but I was really not into maxi skirts for a long time because I felt like it was yet another example of "our society wants me to cover up EVERY INCH of my fat body bc it's supposedly bad and shameful." Which, obv, I was not into. But then I learned that I really liked wearing maxi skirts with crop tops and showing off a little bit of belly! :)
