Whether you are going on a mental health walk with your bestie, trying a new form of joyful movement, or just longing for a comfy stretchy outfit to wear around the house, plus size folks deserve cute and inclusive activewear options.
For so long it felt almost impossible to find even separate pieces that had an inclusive size range, were made to fit fat bodies well, and were actually cute. Luckily, the fashion industry has made some big strides in the plus size activewear department! If you are new to shopping for plus size activewear, I have highlighted a few key things I look for when I’m shopping!
What To Look For In Plus Size Activewear
Fit & Function: When it comes to any kind of shopping, knowing your measurements and how to read the brand size chart is super important. You can find my Plus Size Measuring Guide blog post here. Once you get your sizing down, it’s important to think about what you need the function of this activewear to be. For example, if you are going to be doing high-intensity movement, you will likely want an activewear set that makes you feel supported and more compressed, so look for those kinds of descriptors when shopping!
Fabric & Opacity: Much like considering the function of your activewear, you will want to consider, more specifically, the kind of fabric you are choosing. As many of us know, some leggings are completely see-through when even slightly stretched, so if you are going to be wearing this activewear into public spaces, be sure to check the material details and customer reviews for mention of opacity issues.
Size Inclusivity: Last, but certainly not least, I highly encourage looking for activewear brands that are invested in creating and expanding size inclusivity. I’m so happy to see there are even more options for plus size activewear than there were the last time I wrote about this topic, and I’m really hoping we continue to see more and more growth!
Where to Shop for Plus Size Activewear
I have rounded up some amazing plus size activewear options from 8 size-inclusive retailers!
Universal Standard
Size Range: 4XL/38-40 – 4XS/00-0 | Price Range: $$$ – $$$$
Universal Standard’s Next-to-Naked line is full of pieces that are as soft as they are classic and versatile. I personally own multiple of the bodysuits and they are seriously incredible. Universal Standard is one of the few plus size stores that grades their clothing on real life models, instead of patterning their pieces with extra inches. That means the fit is truly made for our plus size bodies!
Size Range: 7X/40-44 – L/12-14 | Price Range: $$ – $$$
I have sung Superfit Hero’s praises before and I don’t plan on stopping any time soon. They have such a clear commitment to creating high-quality products that celebrate plus size bodies in their design and in how they are shown to shoppers on diverse body types.
Beyond Yoga
Size Range: 4X/30-32 – XXS/0-2 | Price Range: $$$ – $$$$
Beyond Yoga is a brand I have been a fan of for years now, and I am so glad to see their 1X-4X range thriving! If you are looking for well-made staple activewear that feels like a cloud (and who isn’t??), Beyond Yoga is for you!
Fabletics
Size Range: 4X/22-24 – XXS/0-2 | Price Range: $$ – $$$
Fabletics is a little different than the other brands on this list because it is the only one that offers a membership model. While you don’t have to opt in to the membership to be a customer, there are certainly cost-saving benefits and perks, but you can read more about that here.
Fabletics has a wide variety of fabric types, compression levels, and styles to choose from, so there is no shortage of options. They also do limited edition collaborations with celebrities who design some unique pieces, which is super fun. One of my favorite things I saw on their site, aside from the body representation in the models, was how many fun colors and patterns were offered in the full size range. It can often feel like companies that make cute and colorful options don’t carry those over to the plus sizes, and I’m happy to see Fabletics is giving the same energy to all sizes they offer.
Girlfriend Collective
Size Range: 6XL – XXS | Price Range: $$$
Girlfriend Collective prides themselves on their ethically-made activewear made with recycled materials. They offer a wonderfully inclusive size range, they are also mindful about how they impact the environment by using eco-friendly dyes, creating their pieces in certified factories, and offering a takeback recycling program called ReGirlfriend. Fit note about this brand: all items but their bras run about 1-2 sizes small!
Reprise Activewear
Size Range: 6X – XS | Price Range: $$$ – $$$$
You may remember Reprise Activewear from my recent Anti-Diet Holiday Gift Guide Post! They are an incredible activewear brand with a mission of making thoughtful, sustainable, and size-inclusive pieces for any level of movement! Campers at Fat Camp last year all received an activewear set from Reprise and it was so special to see so many fat folks feel included in the design of their products.
Old Navy
Size Range: 4X/28-30 – XXS/00 | Price Range: $ – $$
Old Navy is a go-to staple for so many people for a reason. They offer a wide variety of fun patterns and styles while also carrying great basic pieces that you can wear anywhere at any time! I also love how budget-friendly their options are even at full-price!
Vitality
Size Range: 4XL – 2XS | Price Range: $$$
Vitality is a new brand to me, but after perusing their website, I am definitely intrigued! They have a good mix of some traditional activewear/athleisure staples and some fun, bold pieces. One thing that caught my eye was the 10 different fabrics they offer — I personally love when brands like this have drop-downs that let you shop the specific fabric you are interested in.
