The Best Sofa For Heavy People

I’ve been dying to write this post for years – and believe me it’s taken that long to find the perfect sofa.

So many of us are part of the “throw away generation” – and with good reason. We can’t afford pieces that will last a long time, which forces us to search for something in our price range that can at least do the job for now. We hate living like that. I love changing up my decor and my space, but buying sofa after sofa because brands can’t create items that hold up to heavy people just didn’t feel right for me.

I started reaching out to brands about their sofas in 2020 and it was, quite frankly – dehumanizing. Usually when I reach out to brands even if the company doesn’t think I’m up their alley they at least send me to their media person to give me some information about their company. When I reached out to some very notable furniture brands to get information on their interest in plus size consumers, creating furniture for fat bodies, and the durability of their product I got a lot of “I’m sorry I don’t think our brand values align”. What values need to align when I’m asking a brand about their products construction?

I took the hint. If a company wouldn’t speak to me because I was a fat, I’d try to contact them as a customer. That approach went a bit better, until I would ask what their warranty covers and if they felt their couches could hold up to my partner and I and our 1000 combined pounds. What I learned is that most brands in the super trendy and cool sofa spaces just aren’t thinking about plus size bodies.

But that changed when I spoke to Couch Potatoes.

When I asked how they felt about accessibility to fat people, their warranty, and their construction their response was candid. “We don’t have weight limits on our sofas, but if something we’re making isn’t holding up to any and all bodies then we have some work to do”.* We talked about what accessible seating looks like for fat people, and J and I tested out all of their seating in their warehouse.

Couch Potatoes asked up what we were looking for as plus size people when furniture shopping, and we worked together to figure out which options would work best for people of size.

Then the fun part happened – our sectional arrived. We got the Mesa Corner Sectional in Tribecca Cream leather. It was aesthetically perfect, but more importantly J and I can flop on this with several of our friends (furry ones included) and feel secure in knowing that we wouldn’t be dragging it to a landfill in a couple years.

Now we know, you might be thinking cream is a bold choice in a house with 4 dogs – but this leather is no joke. Our muddy pawed babes come running in from the yard directly to the sofa, and all it takes is a damp wash cloth and the mud is gone and the couch looks fresh. No stains, no stinkiness, no issues.

We absolutely love our Couch Potatoes sectional and can’t wait to spend years on it as a family. If you’ve been struggling to find a sofa from a brand you can trust, that truly has plus size people’s bodies and comfort in mind you’ll find it in them. I can’t wait for you to see all the goofy dog photos that will inevitably be taken on this magical sofa through the years!

You can get 10 free fabric swatches sent from Couch Potatoes to start planning your space here. And when you shop with Couch Potatoes you can get $100 off any order with the code FGF100. Happy sofa shopping babes!!!

*please note, that while the company does not have weight limits on their sofas, they have advised me that their sleeper sofa style does not have the supportive springs in place and would not be a great fit for plus size consumers.

Do you have recommendations for recliners? I'm big - but not tall - ya know?

Did you see that they have a weight limit listed now? On their FAQs page it says "We follow current industry standards of 275 to 300 lbs per cushion."

Was that there when you got your sofa or is that a new addition to their website?

That is a new addition to their site, unfortunately. I have tried to chat with them about this numerous times without reasonable explanation.

It looks so good! I’d love one. Unfortunately, I looked at their website and I don’t think they ship nationwide.

@fatgirlflow, do you have other suggestions since this brand you suggested isn’t even shippable?

@Megan, I tried as well through their text option. They said they don’t ship. Big bummer. Back to square one.

They're working on making nationwide shipping a reality - if you're interested definitely message their custom support team and see if it can happen!
